Gas Turbine Top Case Blade Replacement Case Study

Gas Turbine Top Case Blade Replacement Case Study

Background

MODEC Production Services Ghana JV. Ltd. (MPSG), a MODEC Group company and operator of FPSO Kwame Nkrumah & FPSO Prof. John Evans Atta Mills on behalf of Tullow Ghana Ltd, has awarded HPI-GEVAQ Ghana Limited, a Ghanaian Joint Venture of HPI Energy Services, a 3-year contract for the Turbine Generator Health Care of the 7 x LM2500+G4 SAC Engine packages operating on the two vessels.

The main challenges of the contract are to deliver:

  • Availability & Reliability targets
  • Year-on-Year cost savings
  • Industry leading KPI's
  • Increasing local content and reducing dependence on ex-pat labour - in compliance with Ghanian legislation.

    Problem

Minor and Major overhauls of the LM2500+G4 SAC Engines such as minor blade repairs or major Hot Section Exchanges traditionally required the units to be sent from Africa to a European or North American based workshop/depot. This would lead to long downtimes and delays, expensive logistics and frequent staff visits to witness the progress of the repairs.

    The HPI Energy Services Solution

The HPI team, supported by their partners, now complete the work scopes at their local workshop or in-situ, eliminating the need to send the engine onshore.

For example:

Date: April 2019
Work-scope: HPC Top Case
Turnaround Time: 3 Days

The HPI team completed an HPC top case blade replacement and repairs to stages 11 through 16 and also 3 of the OEM’s recommended service bulletins on board the FPSO.

Date: May 2019
Work-scope: Hot Section Exchange
Turnaround Time: 21 Days

For a recent Hot section exchange the total turn round time from stopping the unit, removing it from the package, shipping to the onshore workshop, completing the HSE, shipping it back offshore, installing, aligning and commissioning, was 21 days.

Key Benefits

  • Projected savings over $1,000,000 annually
  • Turnaround Times now in days rather than months
  • Increased local content
